Jason Gay writes today in The Wall Street Journal about Cunningham leaving his job as a Major League Baseball photo editor to pursue a dream beyond photography.

He began selling cross-stitched baseballs made by hand in a shop in his home. Mainly sold as keepsakes, the balls weren’t enough to make a business. A hobby, yes. Not a business.

Next Cunningham designed a new football, smaller than regulation and made of a more supple leather with rawhide laces and little printing on the outside.

He’s now in a second floor shop above a sign maker and auto garage where he makes the footballs. It’s a business.
