Nachtwey’s Eugene Smith Moment

Vanity Fair Fukushima James Nachtwey photo gallery

The January issue of Vanity fair, the one with Gaga on the cover, contains a series of photos of the workers at Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

Near the end of the set of 10 photos is this frame showing a worker tending to the needs of a disabled man at a care center in Natori, about 50 miles from the damaged nuclear plant.

Although the photo is quite striking and mimics Eugene Smith’s Minimata icon, Natori is not mentioned in the story, the disabled man is not suffering from radiation exposure, and his caregiver is not a temporary nuclear plant worker.

What’s it doing in the slideshow about nuclear workers?
